(Interesting how Republicans talk about public servants paying their "fair share" for health insurance and pensions but do not want "free loaders" -- to use their term -- to pay their fair share in a union setting). But, I digress.

The fair share agreement is negotiated between the school board & the local association in collective bargaining. The rationale is all teachers receive the benefit of collective bargaining (increase in pay if there is any, benefits, contract language, etc.). Every teacher benefits from collective bargaining and therefore everyone should take part in the cost. If a teacher wishes to not become a member, they can get back a portion of their dues. This is not much different that a real estate agent getting back their R-PAC dues.

I will admit it has been some time since I was involved in negotiating but I don't think it has changed substantially and there may be some locals that do not have fair share agreements. If people would also check with the WERC, they would find out that teachers do not win every time during bargaining. Some people think that the teachers' union is somehow dictating terms to school boards. If teachers & other public sector employees were dictating contract terms, I would think the pay scales would be much different.

It is interesting how people who have no experience in union membership are somehow experts on labor issues.

If Walker and the Republican legislature get their way and bust public sector unions what do people think will happen next? Do they honestly think Walker & the Republicans will stop there? Private sector unions will be next. What then for a decent working wage? Wages are competitive, if we get to the point where there are no unions then we will see all wages kept low. And that is not to suggest they are high by any means. Look at the history of the pay gap between workers and the rich. The gap continues to get wider as the wealthy increase their wealth with exorbitant bonuses and the pay of the workers has remained relatively flat.

What will happen to consumer spending when wages continue to decline relative to the cost of living? People will cut back, which will lead to more layoffs as consumer demand falls. The classic "death spiral" we saw during the Great Depression.

Look at who is behind this movement across the United States to bust unions. People like the Koch brothers are pushing this agenda because it will further enrich them and their friends.

Assembly High Speed Vote

LIN Video Scroller | rev. 1.1314159265

This is Democracy?

When I first watched the news of the 1 AM voting I just saw the shouting of "Shame" and didn't catch what was happening. Various news channels showed pretty much the same footage. Then I was watching Fox 11 News (gasp!) and they showed the video with audio of the railroad job. The Speaker called for the ayes, the nays and ordered the clerk to record the vote and adjourned. It took just seconds. Most Republicans refused to talk to the media (no wonder)except for Rep. Michelle Litjens, R-56 and she commented how the Democrats had the opportunity to vote but chose not to vote. What an outrageous comment!

It was very obvious that the Republicans must have met in caucus and planned this high speed vote. Democrats were shouting to be recognized by the Speaker and were shouting "No!" but were ignored and the Republican members of the Assembly walked out immediately following the vote.

The Democrats are right -- the vote took seconds, probably no more than 4 or 5 seconds and there was no opportunity to vote unless it had been pre-arranged. Even Rep. Bob Zeigelbauer stated it took him by surprise and he had no chance to vote.

This action by the Republicans gives proof that the Republicans have no interest in serving the public. It is all about a power grab and stripping public employees of collective bargaining rights.

WLUK Channel 11 (Green Bay) has the video. Select "Assembly Passes Budget Bill". You may have to replay it a couple of times because the vote happens very quickly. Amazing display of a perversion of democracy. Thank you WLUK! Focus on page 6 and page 24 of the 144 pages and you will find that this bill if passed will allow Walker to sell power plants without bidding and avoid review by the Public Service Commission. The Koch brothers were the 2nd largest contributer to Walker's campaign ($43,000)and have energy interests in Wisconsin. Follow the money and see where the trail leads. If Walker is successful in getting this bill passed, not only will public labor unions be crippled but the billionaires will have a virtual monopoly on energy in Wisconsin. Have people really forgotten the so-called energy crisis and the collapse of Enron following the secret meetings between the White House and the corporations? He goes on to compare this to Greece style protests. In Boehner's words:

* "Now, worse, his political organization is colluding with special-interest allies across the country to demagogue reform-minded governors..."

*"...we see the same sort of protests (Greece) on the streets of Madison, fueled by President Obama's own political machine"

"The President should make it clear to his friends that the people of Wisconsin, and states across America, can handle their own affairs without Washington special-interest money and meddling."

Will Boehner assure us that "special-interest money and meddling" is not coming from the Club for Growth, 527 tax exempt group that does not have to disclose the identities of donors or reveal activities to the IRS or the FEC. The Koch brothers must not fit Boehner's definition of "money" or does the Constitution & Bill of Rights only apply to the wealthy?

Today we will see the non-meddling of a special-interest group (Tea Party) answer to the Koch brothers' petiton (standwithwalker.com). Why is the mainstream media not asking questions about Americans for Prosperity and their connection to the Koch brothers? They should be asking questions about the Koch brothers businesses in Wisconsin and they should be able to connect the dots if they do some leg work. But, it is much easier for the media to take press releases from these organizations rather than ask tough questions.

This struggle in Wisconsin is about the future of collective bargaining and the rights and financial future of ALL Americans. If the Koch brothers and their billionaire friends win in Wisconsin it will be very difficult times for the working class and the middle class.

Another Republican't Misnomer - Budget "Repair" Bill

Another Republican't Misnomer - Budget "Repair" Bill

Republican't Governor Scott Walker should call his bill what it is - a budget union busting bill - certainly not a budget repair bill. Get rid of the only real competition Republican't have -- labor unions. Then our broken election process will be 100% dominated by big money donors. That is why other Republican't governors across the USA are watching Wisconsin so closely.

If Walker gets his way we will see this effort replicate across the country. And if those efforts are successful and unions and collective bargaining are destroyed then who will speak for the working class? We will see further cuts in wages in both the public and private sector. We will see benefits lost and working conditions compromised. Corporations will make even more profits than what we saw in 2010. Stockpiling greenbacks and not hiring workers - typical Republican't recipe for greed.

In Wisconsin we have about a $130 million dollar hole in the budget after handing out about $150 million in tax breaks. And we know where those tax breaks went. The WI Dept of Revenue records can be checked to find out how much corporate income tax the largest corporations actually pay. There is a significant gap in what the corporate income tax rate is and what those corporations actually pay.

Republican'ts repeat the refrain about how high the corporate income tax rate is but they do not want to deal with questions about how much taxes corporations actually pay. And this tax evasion exists across the country. The average working class taxpayer who has their income show up on W-2 forms cannot afford to pay for a tax attorney to find loopholes in the tax code. And look at who writes the tax code.

Too many people have forgotten their history and the accomplishments men and women in the labor movement made:
8 hour work day
Abolition of child labor
Safer working conditions
Minimum wage
Workers compensation
Then end of company stores

And the list goes on. Do people really think those benefits will continue without labor unions? Workers in non-unionized work places have seen their wages rise to keep up with increases that have been gained by union workers. The pay gap between workers and CEOs has increased dramatically. Payments to CEOs of corporations that have had the greatest layoffs has been increasing. Reward executives who cut their work force."So be it" in the words of the Speaker of the House.

This struggle in Wisconsin is not simply about public employees making a larger contribution to their pension and paying more of the health care costs. This struggle is about the economic viability of all public and private sector workers.

Don't let misrepresentations and distortions cloud your thinking. Take some time to seriously consider what is ahead. Look at the big picture. Look at the long term outlook. Look at who is funding the ads you see on TV support the Governor's proposal. Ask yourself what is going to happen when workers take another financial hit. Are they going to be going out and create more consumer demand? How will this proposal "repair" the budget? Why should Wisconsin give more tax breaks to corporations and take more from the workers? Why are the those who supported Walker in the 2010 campaign exempt from this proposal?

Let's work together on real solutions to make Wisconsin a better place.

Let's disenfranchise more voters (especially if they are likely to lean left!)

The Republican'ts campaigned on the idea they were going to focus on the economy. Apparently these candidates have forgotten the $236 billion surplus at the end of the Clinton administration & the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and the runaway spending policies that ensued. During the 8 years of the George W. Bush presidency, the national debt increased by over 70% (from $5.7 trillion to over $9.8 trillion). To put it another way, in the fiscal years 1978 – 2005 during Democrat presidents, federal spending increased by 9.9% and the debt increased by 4.4% and GDP increased by 12.6%. Out of control spending? Perhaps John Boehner and his colleagues should look in the mirror.

During the same 1978 – 2005 period, under Republican presidents, federal spending increased by 12.1%, the federal debt increased by 36.4% and GDP increased by 10.7%.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms

Thirty second sound bites during an election year just does not cut it for those of us who have a longer memory than elephants. We remember the years of supply side economics, 10% unemployment, and blue collar job losses.

A review of US Department of the Treasury data will show the steepest curves of the national debt occurred during the Republican years, not the Democrat years contrary to the false claims you will hear on the radio and TV. http://cedarcomm.com/~stevelm1/usdebt.htm

Congress needs to take a long hard look at unsustainable military spending (the 2010 Pentagon budget is $693 billion). The amount that is spent for soldiers' pay and veterans' benefits is a small part of this budget. We need to cut out wasteful budgeting & procurement practices and bloated bureaucracies. For some unknown reason policy makers find it easier to spend money on expensive toys than it is to take care of our people.

Nearly every day we hear stories about the inability of government to get aid to victims of tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina, the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, flooding in Pakistan, etc. If we were not spending a trillion dollars for an ill-conceived war in Iraq & Afghanistan we would have the resources we could commit to assisting people who are suffering from these tragedies. Contrary to the belief held by some politicians in Washington, our most important resource is not oil – it is our future, our children.

As for me, I will always vote for people first.

Crazy Viral Email

Some of you may have received the "Cash for Clunkers" viral email. I received it recently from a colleague and just couldn't responding to the sender. The main premise is we wasted taxpayers money. Here is my response followed by the original viral "Cash for Clunkers" email.

I don't often respond to your emails but I just couldn't let this one pass without a response.

Don't forget to factor in the jobs and salaries for those people in the auto industry and related industries. Even John Bergstrom was praising the program in his TV interview a couple of weeks ago. Were there some problems with the "cash for clunkers" program? Sure, what program doesn't. Did the program save our economy? No, but it stopped some of the bleeding for awhile. During one of the most serious economic periods since the Great Depression we cannot sit on our thumbs and continue the tax cuts for the rich. It is obvious that approach was not working (except for those at the top rung).

And let's not forget the tens of billions for Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater, etc. What kind of return did we get there? Not to mention the black eye they have given America. Halliburton gophers getting paid $50,000 and what do we pay our soldiers? Contracting and outsourcing is not only a joke it is a travesty.

The government has become a favorite whipping boy for the neo-cons like Huckabee (who is using his radio program to run for President), Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Beck, et. al. I would rather get the facts and not all the noise. I guess they think America will believe the lies and misrepresentations if it is repeated often enough. Pulling the plug on grandma? Medical care for illegals? Obama is not an American citizen? Follow the money. Who is funding this battle against health care reform (a misnomer--should be called health insurance reform. Most of us have pretty good health care--not everybody has access or can afford it.) You will find the insurance industry, Dick Armey and others behind this so-called "grass roots" campaign (it is really astroturf!). It is well orchestrated and financed by Freedom Works and similar programs run by various lobbying firms. They certainly have the right to free speech and lobby. However, they should be upfront and honest with the public. The health care industry is spending $1.4 Million/DAY on lobbying efforts with both Democrats & Republicans feeding at the trough. And why not? Over 1/2 of the health care lobbyists (1,418 of 2,737) used to work for the government they are trying to influence. Does anyone really think those 5 lobbyists/member of Congress is really working in the public interest?

I don't mind paying taxes because we generally get good service (roads, schools, bridges, etc.). I just wish everyone would pay their fair share. Check the top marginal rate during the Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan years (I'll give you a hint--they were much higher than today!) with the tax cuts under Bush. Also check the taxes that some of our largest corporations pay (Walmart, Kimberly Clark, etc.). We wouldn't have a school funding crisis in Wisconsin if we could just get the corporations to pay their fair share. They will argue supply side economics or "trickle down" economics but we have seen very little trickle down. I am more of a believer in paying workers an honest wage/salary and let them pump the economy through spending and savings.

Check out what has happened over the last several years in terms of the differential in pay between CEOs and the average worker. A generation ago, top CEOs made 30 to 40 times the pay of average workers. Now we have CEO pay outpacing average worker pay by 344 times. The gap between worker and executive pay has multiplied tenfold since the early 1980s. I have no problem with executives making more money than workers but what we have here is a case of corporate greed run amok. Unbridled capitalism has become a license to steal.

On top of that, even as our economy has been tanking the productivity of the American worker has gone up and is higher than any other country. And what do workers get for that? Layoffs, pay cuts or freezes, corporate threats to move the business to another area, etc.

In closing, I am not pointing my finger at all corporations--some corporations do pay their workers a decent wage and do have a belief in social justice. I am not going to paint all corporations with the same brush. Now, if we can just get Beck, O"Reilly, Hannity, Huckabee, & Limbaugh to do the same when they launch their criticism of the government. They find some government program to criticize and then make general attacks on the entire federal government as if it the enemy.

Our system of government is not perfect but I will still take it over any other. And, I believe the government is best left in the hands of the general public (We the people...) and not the corporate executives. People should read the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution again (assuming they have already read it at one time in their life). Rush still confuses the Declaration of Independence with the U.S. Constitution.

Sorry, my friend! You won't get me to buy into this faux noise!

The viral email follows:

Our Savings in the Cash for Clunkers Program
Do you make decisions like this?? .

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of
gas a year.

A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons a
year.

So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline
consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons saved per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels is approximately 5 hours worth of US consumption. More
importantly, 5 million barrels of oil, at $70 per barrel, costs about $350
million dollars.

So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350
million. (Do the math - it's a mere 880% loss!)

We spent $8.57 for every dollar saved. What a deal!

So keep the faith - they'll do just as great a job with health care,
too!!!

No end to silliness (or is it craziness?)

Where to begin? I thought I had seen everything but every day brings out more craziness. Now the Faux nation is encouraging its readers to keep their kids at home so they won't be indoctrinated by President Obama's back to school speech to America's school children on Tuesday, 08 September. His message urging "students to take personal responsibility for their own education, to set goals, and to not only stay in school but make the most of it" is indoctrination? I thought that was part of the school's mission? Isn't that why we have tax supported public education? Critics point to the letter writing exercise in lesson plans suggested by the Department of Education. I taught for 35 years in a public school and I didn't rely on lessons planned by others, I often used their ideas but would tailor them to my students and their needs. Schools across the country are telling their teachers to refrain from showing the speech live to their students. Some schools are taping the speech and allowing the teachers to show it after giving the students (parents) a chance to "opt out". This is the President. This is the United States of America. Why are we so fearful that our President would indoctrinate our students in a "pep talk" speech that kicks off the school year. What is the motivation of the critics. It does not appear to me that they are looking out for the best interests of our students. We may see even more sponsors give up on Beck, O'Reilly, et. al.

Health Care Scare Tactics

We can't blame the major networks entirely for the negative press about health care. Even though they are giving what I consider too much coverage to a small number of protesters, they are having the medical experts (Dr. Tim Johnson for example) debunk some of the myths about health care. One of the most outrageous myths was started by former NY Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughy on the Fred Thompson show. She announced the myth of required Medicare counseling sessions on how to end life early. Every responsible medical doctor I have seen interviewed has stated this "death panel" idea that is being circulated by the extremists is absolutely not true. And the crackpots keep complaining about Congress not reading the bill.

You can watch videos on the "White House Reality Check" webpage:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck/

Health Care

There is a lot of "noise" about members of Congress not reading the "Affordable Health Choices Act" but it seems to me the people who are not reading the bill are the ones who are making the most noise. (You can read a summary of the bill at Sen. Kennedy's website http://kennedy.senate.gov/newsroom/press_release.cfm?id=d6838b97-c989-48dc-87be-5e11805cd08d ) The bill can be found as a PDF file at http://help.senate.gov/BAI09A84_xml.pdf if you are so inclined to read the entire bill.

Upon reading it you will find most of the noise by the Republican'ts and talking TV heads is not true. It is interesting to note where most of this noise originates. Contrary to what the noisemakers are saying, the protest behind health care reform is not a "grassroots" movement. It is being carefully orchestrated by Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe of "Freedom Works". It is also interesting to see their ties to "Big Pharma" and for profit health companies. They certainly have the right to free speech and give their opinions on health care but given their interest in "transparency" in government the protesters should be transparent in disclosing their ties to Armey, Kibbe, Freedom Works, Big Pharma, etc. You can watch Rachel Maddow's investigative piece on her website http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/32380712#32380712

For all the complaints about the media being controlled by the left, we are not seeing the networks covering this story. Lou Dobbs, where are you? Must be the "birther" and "deather" and immigrant stories are more important to Dobbs and CNN.

G.O.P.s Alternative "Budget"

Budget? Aren't budgets supposed to have numbers in them? The obstructionists are at it again--complaining about the Administration's budget because it is short on specifics but their 19 page document is woefully short on specifics. Just another diatribe proposing tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. For those of you who wish to read this 19 page document you can go to
http://www.gop.gov/solutions/budget/road-to-recovery-final

Boehner and company did not do a very good job of answering questions about the budget. Bets are they will present their "budget" at the last minute and demand Congress vote on it (without having time to read it, discuss, debate, etc.) Sounds like their plan for the (un) PATRIOT(ic) Act, their proposal to create the Dept. of Homeland Security, etc.

What will the deficits look like under the Republican plan? (Don't bother to ask them, they don't have a clue)

Apparently some of the G.0.P. (not an error--that is a zer0, not the letter "O") critics have been told to "shut up and be quiet". Maybe the G.0.P. neo-c0ns figured because the Democrats got so much mileage out of criticizing W it would work for them also.

It is way beyond time that our elected members of Congress work for what is best for this country and stop jockeying for what they perceive to be positions of leadership. Most of them don't have a clue what true leadership (or statesmanship) is.

425 Votes From Victory

If we could have changed 425 voters in the 1st Assembly race we would have turned our district blue! We can do it in 2010. We will need to get our candidate's name out in the districts where we need more votes. We can do that by a serious "letter to the editor" campaign, getting our members to post on our blog, using videos by our candidate and party chair, creating a presence on MySpace, Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, etc.

We need to have a more coordinated effort between the democrats of Door, Kewaunee, and Brown counties.

The Democratic Party of Door County needs to keep the momentum going and keep the 2008 volunteers (approximately 275 volunteers) interested and engaged. Our goal is to double that number in the next two years. Let's work hard on getting the volunteers to join and contacting our friends, neighbors, and co-workers and signing them up as members.

Door Dems Website Updated!

The Democratic Party of Door County has updated its webpage:

http://democraticpartyofdoorcounty.club.officelive.com/default.aspx

Check out our website to find our:

* Calendar including information on FUNdRAISING events

* Links to candidates (Dick Skare for 1st Assembly, Steve Kagen for 8th District U.S. Congress, Barack Obama for U.S. President & Joe Biden for Vice President)

* Our newsletters including an archive of previous newsletters!

* Information on how to join the Democratic Party

* Information on how to volunteer and help elect Progressive Democrats!

Volunteers Wanted!

Stop by the Democratic Party HQ to volunteer some time to help elect Progressive Democrats in the 04 November election (Dick Skare, Steve Kagen, Barack Obama & Joe Biden).
